Inquiry Project Slides and Reflection - "Consolidating on BTC"

Slides-Consolidating on BTC

This inquiry project has solidified my commitment to exploring the Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) methodology as a vital tool for cultivating effective learning environments in secondary mathematics and beyond. I found a compelling alignment between cognitive science research on long-term memory consolidation and the daily practices BTC promotes to increase student retention and understanding. I now feel prepared to integrate this method further into my lesson planning, committing to a process of ongoing learning alongside my students.

A key realization during this inquiry was how the timing of consolidation impacts lesson structure. We understood that because consolidation occurs at the end of a BTC lesson block, the traditional "Shape of the Day" must shift. Instead of simply listing content topics, the daily plan needs to foreground the specific competencies being developed.

Finally, collaborating with JJ was an enriching aspect of this project. Because he experienced BTC with a different School Associate (SA), we were able to compare practices across different school contexts, particularly regarding the essential role of consolidation. JJ brought exceptional teamwork skills to our sessions, making our collaboration highly effective and productive.
